What is COPA U?

COPA University is a community of world class Platinum CSIPs, instructors and extraordinary volunteers. They’re 100% data driven and dedicated to delivering current, relevant and practical information to pilots seeking the same.  We call it, “Keep learning, Keep Flying!” Like any academic institution we can only be judged by the product of our mission, training knowledgeable pilots who exercise excellent Aeronautical Decision Making.

We are proud to say that we don’t see pilots that have attended an in person COPA Pilot Proficiency Program (CPPP) in accident reports.

What is CPPP?

The CPPP (COPA Pilot Proficiency Program) is a world-class recurrent training program that focuses on Cirrus-specific education, safety, and flying proficiency for pilots, owners, and partners seeking to make the most of their Cirrus experience.

Conducted by COPA University in conjunction with the COPA Safety and Education Foundation, these fun and informative events are tailored to the participant’s recurrent training requirements with instruction provided by some of the world’s best Platinum Cirrus Standardized Instructor Pilots (CSIPs).

3-Day CPPP

A 3-Day CPPP is based upon a classroom format that follows three different tracks such as Avionics, Weather and Ownership. You can attend any class you’d like. The session begins Friday at lunch and ends on Sunday morning. You have the option to enhance your weekend by adding flight training and/or flight simulator sessions. Flight training lessons are available Thursday through Saturday. Simulator sessions are available Friday through Sunday. The schedule below illustrates a sample 3-Day program.

Sample 3-Day Schedule

1-Day CPPP

A 1-Day CPPP is a single day and single classroom track which takes place on a Saturday. The one day event is designed to be a smaller time commitment allowing pilots to arrive, attend the event and depart on the same day. The courses are more general in nature and apply to all pilots in all aircraft. See the sample 1-Day schedule below.

Ground

All CPPP events include hours of classroom-style ground instruction taught by very experienced Platinum CSIPs. New to a turbocharged airplane? Want to know more about Skew T? Are you a new IFR pilot or even new to Cirrus? Our classes address all these topics and much more. See the link below to learn more about our course offerings. Most courses taught during our 3 and 1 day events are eligible for FAASafety WINGS knowledge credit.

Course Offerings

Simulator Instruction

Participants have the option to add a 1.5 hour one-on-one integrated flight simulation session. The flight simulation session utilizes the latest Noble Perspective / Perspective + and RealSimGear Avidyne Entegra simulators. Sim participants have the opportunity to work on IFR skills and knowledge as well as abnormal and emergency procedures. This is your chance to ask questions and work on deficient areas.

Flight Instruction

Participants have the option to add a 3 hour flight training session. What better way to learn more about your airplane and how to fly it than registering for a flight with an experienced Platinum CSIP?  You will learn about risk management, avionics, and systems in your airplane. Each session will start with a short cross-country flight followed by a traffic pattern and normal landing. From there it's your choice of what you would like to work on for the remainder of the session.

Partner in Command

Available to non-pilot flying companions during 3-day CPPP events, this course is intended to teach you how to be a confident and active participant during a flight as well as a resource to the pilot. Participants engage in a Saturday morning classroom session where they learn about aircraft components and the availability and use of safety equipment in an emergency including Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS). After lunch participants gather at the flight simulator where they learn to control the autopilot and practice the use of safety equipment.

Critical Decision Making (CDM)

At CDM events we look at ourselves. We discuss with each other how we think and what drives us to make the decisions that we make. We take an honest look at ourselves and explore our health, our proficiency, our attitudes toward safety, and our current skill set. We look at scenarios that other pilots have faced and ask ourselves questions like “What would I do?" “Would that have been a good decision for me?” “What might I have I done differently”? We explore external pressures and how they affect our decision-making process. Wings credit is available for these 3-4 hour discussions.

From a pilot of a partner in command after attending the partner in command sim session

“Didn't get a chance to tell you how much she appreciated your calm demeanor and teaching philosophy. You made a huge headway into her psyche for being an active passenger. She wants to attend the the next CPPP. Pretty cool, huh. So thank you for that.”
