I will follow up if I hear about more FAA communication with this guy.

I look forward to the Opposing Bases review of the subject. They’ve covered a few of the items discussed above in different scenarios.
Not wanting to wade into the debate about this specific incident as I have no idea what I’d do – not being there, my recollection of their take:
Not necessary to squawk 7700 in an emergency, fly the plane - although it’s usually in the context of already having declared to ATC.
Squawks 7600 and 7700 both set off alarms in the tower and get their attention right away.
If they see a 7600 inbound or off course, they’re moving planes out of the way without a second thought.
Lost comm in IMC is an emergency to them and handled essentially the same.
Reading the responses, I don’t think anyone is advocating to do “whatever you want” but rather to do “whatever is necessary” in your determination as PIC.

I was catching up on my Opposing Bases podcasts this weekend. Episode 278 show topic was about lost comms. I was like, this story sounds very familiar. It was the events from this lost comm story.
I want to thank @turrisi, @EdWatters, @Romeo_Hotel, and others who contributed to taking this typical forum thread to the next level. Connecting the pilot and controller sides provides an invaluable experience for everyone.
As expected, the episode generated a lot of feedback, which was reviewed in episode 279. I suspect the topic will be discussed in many future episodes as well in this forum.
I hope more of these types of connections can be made with future events.
