I hope you all had a wonderful start to the New Year! With 2010 just beginning, we have a NEW product available, which many of you have been awaiting for quite some time... The G3 TriTips!
This new STC is similar to the popular G1/G2 TriTip product we have offered for several years, now! In short, the TriTips are modified wing tips designed specifically for Cirrus aircraft to increase the ability to See & Be Seen, day/night recognition, increase light output and most importantly, safety. The modification includes increasing the size of the light pocket in the tips and installing HID BoomBeams. The results are phenomenal! The LED lights are an improvement for some recognition, however, they were not designed for the pilot to see more effectively. The TriTips do both with much more light.

The G3 TriTips are for sale for $6,495 so contact us or your Cirrus Service Center to order.

Great news Allison. How long do you anticipate it would take to remove my current tips before I ship them to you? I'm hoping to get this done when the next arctic blast is forecasted to hit to minimize my down time.
Hi Jim,
It should be really, REALLY quick. The only thing involved is removing the screws connecting the tip and the wing and disconnecting 3 harnesses. Worst case is about 15 min per side. Be sure to give me a call so we can schedule our shop to turn them around in 5 business days.
Allison
I look forward to a PIREP James.

Hi Kevin,
There has already been a completed installation with PIREP. Please, keep in mind the PowerPulse is available as an additional option to G3's without a stormscope. Check it out... http://www.cirruspilots.org/forums/p/116084/477591.aspx#477591

Allison, I am also interested but want the wig-wag effect (for greater safety in flight) using the PowerPulse. However our G3 is Stormscope equipped. From your post it seems to me that LoPresti may have learned via a HIRF analysis that the G3's common ground wire return (presently grounding all the wingtip lights (NAV/Position, Strobe/Anticollision, LED recognition)) results in a stormscope problem when the Recognition light is pulsed. David LoPresti confirmed to me last fall via email that the PowerPulse would work with the G3 LED recognition lights. But I don't recall any comment as to whether or not a new separate ground wire is needed if a Stormscope is present. Many of us with G3's with Stormscopes would welcome your thoughts on this and reasons why the Stormscope is incompatible with the PowerPulse. And if you believe this incompatibility might be overcome in the future with additional wiring, etc. Thanks in advance!

As you know, the stormscope is designed to detect electrical arcing hundreds of miles away from the aircraft and display them as lightening “strikes” on the stormscope.
The HID BoomBeam™ system offers light outputs of 300%-500% greater than standard lighting by efficient electrical arcing in the lamp/starter located in the wing, only a few feet from the stormscope. The stormscope does not filter out the arcing HID lights create.
Whenever the TriTips™ are initially turned ‘on’, the stormscope detects a single "strike" from the start-up arc, just like with the air conditioning system and some other Cirrus features. This is not a problem, as the stormscope display can be cleared of the single strike.
The feature of the Powerpulse is that it turns the system off and on for pulsing/wig-wagging of the lights, which creates multiple start-up arcs and displays them as false strikes. We had a customer volunteer to fly his G3 to our facility for the final fit-up and testing. Our engineers and avionics professionals used additional shielding, different grounding techniques, and attempted to eliminate the false strikes, but were unable to completely solve the false strike issue. We are looking into ways of reducing/eliminating the strikes, but it looks unlikely that there will be a solution in the near future. When we spoke to a few customers about this, they responded with:
1. “I would rather have a helluva lot more light so I can see now; rather than wait on a $200 switch for it.”
2. “I am upgrading to an R9 soon, so I can install the Powerpulse when I have the R9.” (no problems with the R9)
3. “If the TriTips and Powerpulse are separate installations, I will just put the TriTips on now and install the Powerpulse whenr/if there is a solution.”
I don't want to get into a Stormscope argument (I solicited a lot of advice before deciding NOT to have it installed) but - correct me if I'm wrong - I think that if you have Stormscope it's more of an enroute tool. The PowerPulse wig-wag is something I want to use in and around metro/Class B areas and in and around the pattern. I see myself using it mostly in the first and last 10 min of each flight.
If embedded thunderstorms are a concern that you feel NexRad cannot/does not solve then the solution is simple... turn off the pulses.
Exactly Jim - most folks I have spoken with intend on using the features like you do. There is no issue with steady-mode, so when in doubt, simply switch from pulse to steady.

Exactly, I want the wig-wag mode for high-traffic VFR situations in which I will not need Stormscope readings. Stormscope (if you have it) is useful for IFR and enroute use. That's why I elected to have the PowerPulse installed with my Tri-Tips (mine is a G2). The only real negative is that I have to "know" why the wig-wag creates the false strikes. Not an issue for me.

Allison, what's the added weight of the tri tips?via iCopa
Ric Fulopfulop@alum.mit.edu2010 SR22 Turbo Perspective FIKI (N654JR)
Hi Ric,
This mod has very little increase in weight, although the lighting result is drastically brighter, offering more safety and visibility. Weight is merely +1.75 lbs at Station 145.

Even more importantly, it's right on the CG so there's almost no moment increase!

That's right, Casey. These are a great upgrade and we have completed two more since I started this thread. We will be able to schedule a couple more very soon, for those who are interested...
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! to Richard Wheeler and Tom Spalding new G3 TriTip owners!!
